Dr. Sivamalar Shijumon

Dr. Sivamalar Shijumon, PhD, FHEA, PGCert, GMICE, is the Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer for the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and MSc Construction Project Management programmes at the University of Greater Manchester Academic Centre, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. She is a civil engineering academic with over 14 years of experience in higher education, research, curriculum development, and academic leadership.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, a Master's degree in Structural Engineering (Gold Medalist), and a PhD in Civil Engineering. She has also completed a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Teaching and Learning and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK, reflecting her commitment to excellence in teaching, student-centred learning, and continuous professional development.

Dr. Sivamalar is a Graduate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (GMICE), a Life Member of the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), and a member of the Society of Engineers – UAE. Through these professional affiliations, she remains actively engaged with developments in the engineering profession and continues to strengthen the link between academia and industry.

Her expertise spans higher education delivery, curriculum development, student engagement, and innovative teaching practices within engineering disciplines. She teaches a broad range of subjects, including structural analysis and design, concrete technology, structural engineering, construction management, and sustainable construction, with a strong emphasis on bridging theoretical knowledge and professional practice to prepare students for successful careers in the construction industry.

Her research interests include sustainable construction materials, innovative concrete technologies, structural engineering, and sustainable infrastructure. She has published several research papers in these areas and continues to contribute to the advancement of civil engineering through research, collaboration, and innovation.

Passionate about student success, Dr. Sivamalar is actively involved in academic advising, dissertation supervision, career guidance, curriculum enhancement, and the coordination of STEM initiatives, industrial visits, and employer engagement activities. She is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages students to achieve academic excellence while developing the professional skills, confidence, and industry readiness needed for successful engineering careers.

Through her dedication to teaching, research, and academic leadership, Dr. Sivamalar continues to make a significant contribution to civil engineering education and to preparing the next generation of engineering professionals.
